Dr. Justin Hammon’s Story of why he wanted to become a Chiropractor!
It all started back in 2005 when my wife’s water broke 2 ½ weeks early with our first child. As we rushed to the hospital in a panic not knowing what to expect and if everything was going to be ok with both mom and baby. The labor was long, hard, and exhausting for the expecting mother. After several hours it was time for delivery. As I watched the doctor push, pull, and twist on the baby’s head; I stood there speechless thinking, “It’s a baby! You have to be gentle with her head.” I assume the baby’s shoulders were stuck, so without authorization out came the knife and he made an episiotomy incision. I watched as my wife pushed and the doctor yanking on the baby’s head. Due to the incision, my wife started to tear and then we heard a POP. The doctor replied, “I think I broke her clavicle.” I was in utter shock. You did what to my baby? I thought. The baby finally came out and they rushed her over to see if her clavicle was broken. The nurse assured me that clavicle fractures were common. I thought again to myself, “if they are so common then why is this the first time I have heard of this.” They confirmed that her clavicle was not fractured. I got to thinking, what was that pop? I quickly pushed it aside to checking on both mom and baby. They performed their entire exam and gave her a great APGAR score which means she is a healthy baby. My wife and I felt differently since we knew our baby refused to nurse (eat), cuddle, and was not sleeping, or going to the bathroom. It was putting a huge toll on my wife and I. With much persistence, my daughter was soon diagnosed with colic. The only assistance we received was a print out of ideas to do and the famous words, “ in time it will pass and not to worry”. Frustration set in knowing that mom, baby, and I would not sleep well due to an angry, crying, and in pain little girl. I was in college at the time try to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was in the process of changing my major when I ran across on the Internet different careers in the health care field. As I went deeper into these careers the word chiropractic jump out at me from the computer screen. I continued my search more vigorously in the benefits and philosophy of chiropractic. The more I read about chiropractic the more I started to fall in love with it. In my studies, I found several articles talking about chiropractic and colic. The more I read the more confidence and hope I was gaining that my little Abbi could be helped.
My wife and I decided to give chiropractic a try since we had already exhausted all other means and we weren’t sure we wanted to be parents anymore. YES, it was that bad. We took her to a chiropractor in Idaho Falls who sat down with us as we explained what was going on or the lack thereof. He then told us what he was going to do and how the baby should respond. I can not think of a doctor in my lifetime until that point who could tell me what he found, how he could help, and what should be the result. We gave our consent to treat and watching him gently adjust her and witnessing with my own eyes the reactions of my daughter was amazing. I knew at that moment I needed to be a chiropractor. If it could help a baby a few weeks old like my daughter and those as old as my grandparents it was what I needed become. Since this experience, I have had my own life changed with the power of a chiropractic adjustment.
